Stop Renting Plastic

The ISP Router Math & Privacy Trap

TDS, Spectrum, and AT&T charge $7 to $15 every month to rent a cheap gateway that creates dead zones, drops video calls, and logs your web browsing. Let's look at the actual numbers.

It's Not Paranoia. It's in the FTC's Official Report.

In October 2021, the Federal Trade Commission published its landmark staff investigation: A Look At What ISPs Know About You: Examining the Privacy Practices of Major ISPs. The FTC found that major broadband providers collect enormous amounts of personal data — including browsing history, unencrypted DNS lookups, app usage, and connected device fingerprints — and share it with advertising networks.

When you plug in an ISP's rented router, your home's traffic flows through their default DNS servers. They see when you wake up, what smart devices are in your bedroom, what medical websites you look up, and what video services your kids watch. In 2017, Congress repealed FCC broadband privacy protections, giving ISPs full legal clearance to monetize subscriber browsing habits without opt-in consent.

How Aaron Tech Restores Your Privacy:

  • DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH): We configure encrypted DNS pointing to zero-log privacy resolvers (Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 or Quad9). Your ISP sees only scrambled packets — they cannot log which websites you visit.
  • Network-Wide Ad & Tracker Blocking: Ads, tracking cookies, and smart TV telemetry are destroyed at the router level before they ever hit your phones, tablets, or TVs.
  • Isolated VLANs: Cheap smart plugs, robot vacuums, and IoT gadgets are partitioned into their own walled-off network so they cannot communicate with your personal computers, financial records, or work laptops.

Structured Cabling & Low-Voltage Drops

WiFi is great, but copper is king. Solid Cat6/Cat6A cabling for workstations, APs, cameras, and entertainment centers.

Ethernet Drops (Cat6 / Cat6A)

From $125 - $225 per drop depending on run distance and attic/crawlspace access. Includes riser-rated or plenum Cat6/Cat6A cable, keystones, faceplates, labeling, and wiremap continuity verification.

Patch Panels & Rack Builds

Turn your tangle of loose wires into a tidy, numbered patch panel and network enclosure. 110 punch-down, Velcro cable dressing, and clean labeling so anyone can service it.

The Drywall Advantage

Most low-voltage techs cut holes and tell you to call a painter. We patch our own drywall and finish the wall so you don't have to hire a second contractor.

Commercial Subcontracting & Dispatch

Available for broker dispatch, IT subcontracting, and multi-drop commercial projects across Dane County. Fully insured (General Liability). Wiremap verified and continuity tested (Fluke cable certification available upon request). Need a fast turnaround on a ticket or project?

Why UniFi?

(And Not That Thing From Best Buy)

Network-Wide Ad Block

Nuke ads before they reach your phone. Your kids' YouTube? Ad-free. Your smart TV? Ad-free. The router handles it — no app, no browser extension, no per-device setup.

VLANs (The Guest Towel Rule)

You give guests towels, not your toothbrush. Keep IoT devices on their own network so your cheap smart plug can't snitch on your laptop. Segmentation is security.

Total Visibility

See exactly who's watching TikTok at 2 AM, which device is hogging bandwidth, and what's phoning home to servers overseas. The dashboard doesn't hide anything.

Hardwired Backhaul

Ethernet between access points means full speed everywhere. Consumer "mesh" systems use wireless repeaters that cut your bandwidth in half. Hard pass.

Coverage Planning

Strategic AP placement based on your floor plan and building materials. No guessing, no "just put it in the center" advice, no dead zones. We've done 3,000+ access points.

No Subscriptions

The UniFi dashboard is free. Forever. No $10/month "premium features" unlock like every other consumer brand. You bought the hardware — you own the features.

Every UniFi system we install, we run ourselves.

Our own network is built on the same gear we recommend to you. Want to see the dashboard in action? Ask for a demo — we'll show you ours.

We had so many devices the WiFi kept cutting out. The mesh system made a huge difference — and we were able to hardwire several devices after your recommendations. Rock solid now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Things people ask before they stop asking Comcast for help.

Most residential installs wrap up in 2–4 hours. That includes mounting access points, running or managing cables, full UniFi configuration, VLAN setup, and a walkthrough so you actually know what you paid for. Business installs with more cable runs and staff training take a full day. We'll give you a realistic time estimate before we show up.
Yes — we can optimize what you have, diagnose why it's underperforming, or help you decide if a migration to UniFi makes sense. We won't push you to replace hardware that's still doing its job. That said, if your "mesh" system is two hops of wireless relay with 40% speed loss at each node, we'll tell you that plainly and explain what replacing it would actually cost.
Everything. Hardware at retail price (sourced directly from Ubiquiti), professional installation, full UniFi Network configuration, VLAN setup, and a training walkthrough so you're not left staring at a dashboard you don't understand. No hidden fees, no "setup charge" on top of the listed price.
No. The UniFi Network application runs locally on your hardware and the full feature set is included at no extra cost. No subscriptions, no feature tiers, no "your advanced settings are $9.99/month." You buy the hardware once. Ubiquiti makes money selling hardware, not locking your data behind a paywall. Our optional maintenance plans are about your time, not software access.

Ready to Upgrade Your WiFi?

Stop rebooting the router and hoping for the best. We'll assess, design, and install a network that actually works — with no recurring fees.
