WiFi, VLANs, PoE, NVR — tech is full of alphabet soup. Here’s what it all means, in plain English, with zero condescension.

16 Terms Defined

Every entry includes a plain-English definition, why it matters for your home or business, and a memorable analogy. Because if you have to Google every third word on a quote, that’s on us.

Access Point (AP)

A device that broadcasts WiFi. Your router has one built in, but dedicated access points cover far more ground at far higher quality.

Why you should care: One AP can’t cover a mansion any more than one speaker can fill a stadium. Dead zones aren’t a signal strength problem — they’re a coverage architecture problem.

Think of it as a cell tower for your house. Your ISP-provided router has one crammed in the corner. We put them where you actually need them.

Mesh WiFi

Multiple access points working together to cover your entire home under one network name.

Why you should care: Consumer mesh (Eero, Google) uses wireless links between units — each hop cuts your speed. Professional mesh (UniFi) uses hardwired ethernet backhaul: full speed at every node, everywhere.

Consumer mesh is like whispering a secret across a room, person to person. Each retelling loses something. Hardwired backhaul is a phone call directly to each person. We always wire ours.

PoE Power over Ethernet

A technology that sends both internet data and electrical power through a single ethernet cable to cameras, access points, and other devices.

Why you should care: No outlet hunting. No extension cords taped to your ceiling. No electrician needed. Just one clean cable running where you want the device.

It’s like a garden hose that also powers your sprinkler. One connection, two jobs done. The PoE switch in the closet handles the power; your camera or AP doesn’t know or care.

VLAN Virtual LAN

A virtual wall inside your network that keeps different types of devices isolated from each other — even though they share the same physical hardware.

Why you should care: Your security cameras can’t talk to your kid’s iPad, and your cheap smart plug can’t snitch on your browsing history. Most network installers skip this step entirely.

You give guests towels but not your toothbrush. A VLAN is that policy enforced automatically, at the network level, at all times. Most handymen think a VLAN is a type of minivan.

NVR Network Video Recorder

A dedicated device that stores your security camera footage locally on your own hard drive, not on a cloud server.

Why you should care: Cloud-based storage means your footage lives on Amazon’s servers, costs $15-$20/month forever, and can be accessed or subpoenaed without your knowledge. Local storage means you own it.

A box in your closet. Not Amazon’s closet. Not some server farm in Virginia. YOUR closet. YOUR hard drive. Your rules.

WiFi 7 802.11be

The latest WiFi standard, operating on the 6GHz band — a frequency range so new that almost no one else is using it yet.

Why you should care: The 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands are packed with your neighbors’ routers, baby monitors, and microwaves. The 6GHz band is practically empty. Less interference means faster, more reliable connections.

While your neighbors fight over the same congested 2.4GHz channels like it’s a highway at rush hour, you’re on a private road that just opened. We build WiFi 7 networks exclusively.

Backhaul

The connection between your access points — the link that carries data from each AP back to your router and out to the internet.

Why you should care: Wireless backhaul (consumer mesh) splits the radio between serving your devices and talking to the next node. You lose 40-50% of bandwidth at every hop. Hardwired backhaul gives full speed everywhere.

Wireless backhaul is playing a game of telephone. Hardwired backhaul is calling the person directly. We run the wire. Every time.

Firmware

The software baked into your router, camera, smart device, or other hardware — the code that makes the hardware do its job.

Why you should care: Outdated firmware is how most home networks get hacked. Manufacturers patch security holes regularly. If you haven’t updated your router in 2 years, you have 2 years of known security holes sitting wide open.

It’s your router’s operating system. You wouldn’t skip Windows updates for two years. (Actually, don’t answer that.) Our maintenance plans handle this automatically.

Local vs. Cloud

Local means your data lives on hardware in your home. Cloud means your data lives on someone else’s server somewhere else.

Why you should care: Cloud services can change their pricing, terms of service, or simply shut down. Local storage can’t be subpoenaed without a warrant to your house. Your data works even when the internet goes down.

Cloud = your data lives on someone else’s computer and they charge you rent. Local = it lives on your hardware in your house. We build local. Always.

Home Assistant

Free, open-source smart home software that runs on a small computer in your house and controls all your devices from a single dashboard.

Why you should care: Works with 2,000+ brands. No subscriptions. No corporate server required. Your automations keep running even if the company that made your smart bulb goes bankrupt.

Imagine if every smart home app — Philips Hue, Nest, Ring, August locks, all of it — collapsed into one screen that you own. No ads. No upsells. No “your smart home now requires a $9.99/month plan.”

Frigate

Open-source AI camera software that identifies people, vehicles, dogs, cats, and more — entirely on your local hardware, with no cloud involvement.

Why you should care: Ring and Nest charge $10-$20/month for AI detection that processes your footage on their servers. Frigate does the same thing (often better) for $0/month on a box in your closet.

It’s the bouncer at your front door who never sleeps, never calls Amazon, and has already learned to ignore the neighbor’s cat. We integrate Frigate with Home Assistant so your phone gets the alert, not a corporation.

Smart Home Hub

A central device or software platform that connects and controls all your smart devices, regardless of brand.

Why you should care: Without a hub, you have 7 different apps, nothing talks to each other, and “automation” means pressing the right button in the right app at the right time. That’s not smart. That’s just more steps.

It’s the air traffic controller for your house. Without it, your lights don’t know when you leave, your thermostat doesn’t know when the door opens, and your cameras don’t know to record when the doorbell rings.

Zigbee / Z-Wave / Matter

Wireless protocols for smart home devices — the languages your sensors, switches, and locks speak to each other and to your hub.

Why you should care: Not all smart devices speak the same language. Buying the wrong protocol means they won’t work with your hub. Matter is the newest standard, backed by Apple, Google, and Amazon to finally make everything compatible.

Think of them like Bluetooth — but designed specifically for smart home devices that need to run on batteries for years and send tiny messages all day long. We work with all three and steer you toward what actually interoperates.

IoT Internet of Things

Every “smart” device in your house: thermostats, cameras, plugs, sensors, fridges with touchscreens, whatever.

Why you should care: Most IoT devices phone home to corporate servers constantly and have the security of a screen door. A compromised smart plug can be a foothold into your entire network. VLANs fix this.

The Internet of Things is exciting until you realize your $15 smart plug is broadcasting to servers in three countries and has a default password of “admin.” We quarantine IoT devices from your real network as a matter of course.

DNS Domain Name System

The phone book of the internet. Translates human-readable addresses like “google.com” into the IP numbers computers actually use to route traffic.

Why you should care: Network-wide ad blocking and parental controls work at the DNS level — before ads ever reach your device. Block the ad server’s address in DNS and every device on your network stops seeing ads. No browser extensions. No per-device setup.

Ad blocking at the DNS level means telling the phone book “lose the number for every ad server.” Your phone tries to call them. The phone book says the number doesn’t exist. Ad never loads. Kids’ YouTube: ad-free. Smart TV: ad-free. Simultaneously.

Bandwidth vs. Latency

Bandwidth is how much data can move at once. Latency is how long it takes to get there. They are not the same thing, and confusing them is why some “fast” connections still feel slow.

Why you should care: Video calls, gaming, and real-time anything are latency problems, not bandwidth problems. You can have a 1 Gbps connection and still drop video calls if the latency is high. We optimize both.

Bandwidth is how wide the road is. Latency is how fast the cars go. A 6-lane highway with 10 red lights every mile still feels slow. We remove the red lights.
